Dr. Sylvester James (Jim) Gates, Jr. received the Dr. John Hope Franklin Award presented by Diverse at this year's AABHE conference. College and university administrators should be strategic about how they respond to government attempts to root out diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives (DEI) on campus. This significant responsibility has prompted researchers to examine how these institutions prepare academic advisors to effectively serve their diverse student populations.
On March 26, 2025, the Department of Education reopened the online application for Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) plans for federal student loan borrowers. The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.
The U.S. Department of Educations Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) has reopened the online income-driven repayment (IDR) plan and loan consolidation applications, providing a new pathway for eligible borrowers following a significant legal challenge. Leaders have a particular condition that causes them to make mistakes they are human beings. Thats not the worst part either; the worst part is that those mistakes can lead to failures. Worse yet, some of those leaders double up the failure by failing to learn from the mistake. And thats a terrible waste. Authentic Leaders never waste a failure; they learn something from each one.

by Patrick O'Connor, Ph.D. It was arguably one of the best moments in the history of school counseling, and, while I cannot remember who told me about it, I am most certain it happened. A student was in a counselors office, where the topic of discussion was the students academic progress. After engaging in the customary question-and-answer round, and concluding with the bucking up counselors are known to do even when a hurricane is about to demolish the building, the student stood up, slung thei

I had the opportunity to attend the University of Louisiana System Conference this week, where the theme For Our Future stood out not just as a slogan, but as a challenge. Its easy in higher education to get caught in the rhythm of the presentreacting to whats in front of us, staying within the limits of whats familiar, and measuring success by yesterdays metrics.
Dr. Ted Mitchell A new report released by the American Council on Education (ACE) and the MSI Data Project at New York University reveals that Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), and Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) play a crucial role in advancing economic mobility for students of color, despite operating with limited resources.
I have written fairly often on the importance of words. Words matter and most of us could be a little more thoughtful when choosing the words that we use. Our words shape how we think, feel, and connect with others. Words carry weight, subtly influencing conversations and relationships. The sun is shining. Flowers are starting to bloom. Spring has officially arrived in Baltimore and DC. Is it still okay to feel stress, a bit of overwhelm, or even down? It is definitely, and also totally normal. The progression toward the end of the academic year, combined with 24/7 news cycles, can yield uncertainty and anxiety. Managing daily life can be stressful, and we want to acknowledge that many learners in our community may be experiencing additional worry related to loss of research fu
Most organizations and businesses have no idea who their most expensive employee is. They believe, usually mistakenly, that their most expensive employee is the person they pay the most. Thats seldom even close to true. Their most expensive employee is not the highest paid; it is the least engaged. Disengaged people do the bare minimum, often just enough to prevent themselves from being fired.

I rarely research anything without a partner. Often more than one. And this has been the case for a very long time. ( Of course I do occasionally research partner-less, but understand that this is not my preferred way to work.) My research partnerships are long-term and involve much more than doing projects. A couple of partnerships started with a small research project, something that was ‘academic citizenship’ with no external funding involved, and then grew organically after that.
