Jorge Silva-Puras, the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Success at Lehman College, which is part of the City University of New York (CUNY), noted that the six-year completion rate at Lehman is around 51%. Over 80% of the student body at Lehman are individuals of color. whereas Lehman’s is 51.6%.
When asked about support services, 51% of respondents said they had not interacted with an academicadvisor from the community college. Of the 49% of students who did interact with an advisor, only one-third reported talking about courses that would transfer toward an intended program at a four-year college.
In 2018, when Dr. Tim Renick took on the role of senior vice president for student success at Georgia State University (GSU), the university’s demographics were rapidly changing. Renick’s team also discovered that certain courses did not pair well together, and students should be advised to take them successively instead of concordantly.
