As chief executive officers in the California community college system, we embarked upon the topic of STEM out of an acute awareness of the lack of Dr. Lennor Johnson opportunities available to disproportionately impacted communities, and a shared commitment to forging increased pathways for those with the least access.
Aside from writing about the plight of Black men in higher education, in our scholarship, we have employed an anti-deficit approach to highlight critical factors that help to facilitate the access, retention, and persistence of Black men in college. This stifles Black studentsuccess and contributes to low graduation rates from high schools.
As the ranks of HSIs grow and enroll even more students, it’s long overdue that we begin to operationalize the concept of “servingness” as a central factor to the success of these institutions.
