But identifying students who are experiencing depression and getting them the help they need can be challenging for school staff, who are not typically trained to recognize mentalhealth issues. If the teacher isn’t comfortable, then the counselor or casemanager should do that. So where do we start to help students?
Best practices for bringing students back 1: Identify the best candidates The ideal approach is to bring back a small and manageable group of students and then build on their success. Plan for accommodations that will ensure the student’s comfort level and success at school. Be creative. Be proactive.
Because schools are less crowded and students are still not required to attend in person every day, casemanagers and counselors can develop creative plans. They can bring students in for a partial day, and have them work in spaces where they feel safer, while still attending virtually and slowly transitioning into the classroom.
