The Village at Cerritos College is California’s first community college housing project exclusively for homeless students. The Village is located near campus and provides wraparound services including casemanagement, counseling and tutoring. The program began in Spring 2023 with 153 students, 87 of whom were Hispanic.
At the onset, the college uses multiple enrollment strategies, campaigns, and partnerships with community organizations to facilitate Latino students and families receiving the information and support needed to enroll. Recruitment materials, campus tours, and FAFSA open houses are bilingual as are several members of the studentaffairs staff.
“We have a holistic approach to helping our students succeed in life because that’s part of their goal, to move forward academically so they can improve their situation in life,” said Melvilyn Scott, Lead CaseManager for Student Resources and Empowerment Center.
The Challenge: Delivering timely support to a diverse and sizeable student population to foster improved retention and completion rates. The Strategy: Transition to a casemanagement model that offers students proactive guidance and access to resources, and engages faculty to see a complete picture of their academic journey.
Hilda Garke, Coordinator of StudentAffairs Training, shares other ways they provide guidance on faculty training: “Our faculty teaching and learning division has created a website with a detailed FAQ page covering everything from how to log in to what an alert looks like and how to respond.
Many advisors and student success professionals feel overwhelmed, overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated by their institutions. Eighty-four percent of studentaffairs professionals say stress and crisis management lead to burnout. Solution: Empower Advisors with Intelligent CaseManagement Tools.
