Women now receive around 40% of STEM PhDs — far from parity but a definite improvement. Since 2001, the foundation has given over $270 million in advance grants to institutions and nonprofit groups in 41 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. But as time has passed, that excuse has rung less true. Several facts stand out.
