On May 31, news broke that the University of the Arts in Philadelphia would close its doors permanently June 7. The news stunned the U of Arts community, its alum – some of whom found out when the public did – and the city of Philadelphia which has prided itself as a hub for artistic patronage, world-class museums, and educational institutions dedicated to the arts.

According to the National Social Anxiety Center (NSAC), “the fear of public speaking is the most common phobia. It’s even more common than the fear of death.” That means that when someone says they would rather die than speak in public, they are likely telling the truth. At least statistically speaking. Glossophobia is the fear of public speaking. Many new speakers, and even some experienced ones, feel it.

Dr. Said Sewell has been named to lead Morris College, an historically Black college in the City of Sumter, South Carolina. He will become the college’s 11th president, succeeding Dr. Leroy Staggers. Dr. Said Sewell “I am humbled to stand on the shoulders of the predecessors who have gone before me,” said Sewell, who assumes the post July 1. “As their successor, I accept the torch to sustain and grow Morris at any cost.

Dr. Jasmine H. Buxton Jasmine H. Buxton has been appointed vice president for student affairs at West Chester University. She serves as associate vice chancellor at the university. Buxton holds a bachelor’s degree in Black World Studies from Miami University, a master’s in student affairs and higher education from Indiana State University, and a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Alabama.
