Aside from writing about the plight of Black men in higher education, in our scholarship, we have employed an anti-deficit approach to highlight critical factors that help to facilitate the access, retention, and persistence of Black men in college.
There can be no question that this reflects a growing infrastructure to support belonging for all faculty, staff, and students in higher education. Dozens of studies agree that sense of belonging is defined as a basicneed [and human right], a fundamental motivation, sufficient to drive behaviors and perceptions.
Moreover, given the current socio-political era of anti-DEI, faculty and other university personnel have been losing funding, positions, and operational units that support research and programming that help the most vulnerable student populations to thrive and attain optimal outcomes in higher education and in their personal lives.
For example, in 2020, the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) found that Black/African American employees comprise less than 10% of higher education professionals. How did this small percentage of Black administrators facilitate their success against the odds? More than 80% were white.
