Dr. Mark Milliron The partnership, in the form of a pilot program which kicked off in 2021, has allowed NU faculty to use Riipen’s online platform to source employers willing to offer work experience and project opportunities to students and add these projects into their curricula. NU is one of over 430 postsecondary institutions in U.S.
Years later, as higher education faculty in gifted and talented education, school counseling, mental health, and college and career readiness, we have the same and more concerns. In preparation for this op-ed, we reflected on the first time we became aware of test bias and unfairness. Years later, our experiences still haunt us.
Given the extensive barriers individuals with criminal convictions face accessing employment, these policy interventions increase the likelihood of positive workforce placement upon completion of a degree. High school grades are no longer as reliable, standardized test scores became optional for admissions, and placement tests were often abandoned or replaced with alternatives. Replace math placement tests with a “multiple measures assessment.” Traditional placement tests are clunky and high-stakes.

In taking these steps, it’s important to provide staff and faculty with training on how to use correct pronouns and names to ensure each is appropriately used. These issues often affect transgender students throughout their academic journey.
Take advantage of team meetings, Professional Learning Communities, and faculty meetings to explore the hurdles that staff members face individually and as a group. Use headphones, soft materials, and visual separation such as study carrols and seating placement. Reinvent the classroom environment.

And so by that, they prefer the mode of online instruction, but they also wanna network as well. And so they're thinking strategically about how you support your adult learners with career support in finding an internship or job placement once they leave, because transitioning into the right field after graduation is key for a career changer.
To this end, we provide P-12 educators; college/university faculty, administrators, and staff; and other education stakeholders a blueprint to collaboratively work with Black males through a culturally responsive lens. In this chapter, best practices focused on the areas of advising, engagement, instruction, and programing will be discussed.
