In my 30-year journey as a university president, I learned that successful leaders are not those who simply speak quickly, but rather those who learn to listen carefully and ask thoughtful questions. In reflection, the rise of technology and onlinelearning in the late 1990s and 2000s was a period of immense growth and change.
Institutions were able to apply the onlinelearning innovations from PCO units across the university and build lifelong learning relationships with alumni. PCO units’ innovations in onlinelearning and digital marketing and recruitment were adopted across institutions because of newly centralized structures.
They weren’t given enough time to ensure students have what they would need to succeed in a fully onlinelearning environment. From there, we set up sub-committees to keep an eye on these issues and study data, like attendance and student behavior, to figure out what we need to be successful.
